PDF to PDF/A

Convert to the ISO archival format, so the document still looks the same in thirty years. Every font is embedded and the result is checked against the standard.

Why convert to PDF/A?

PDF/A is the ISO 19005 standard for documents that have to survive. Everything the file needs is stored inside it, so it renders the same way decades from now on software nobody has written yet. Courts, government archives and libraries frequently require it.

Every font embedded, so text never falls back to a substitute
Colour described against a profile rather than the screen
Scripts, automatic actions and external references removed
PDF/A-1b, 2b and 3b conformance levels
The result is validated against the standard, not just tagged
Any rule the file cannot meet is reported to you by name

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it look the same?
Yes. Archiving changes how the document is stored, not how it is drawn. Where a font was only referenced, a real one is embedded, which can shift spacing very slightly.
What if my file cannot be made conformant?
You still get the converted file, and we tell you exactly which rule it misses. Common causes are encryption and XFA forms, neither of which PDF/A permits.
Which level should I choose?
PDF/A-2b unless you have been told otherwise. PDF/A-1b is stricter and based on an older PDF version; some government bodies still require it.
Can I convert it back?
A PDF/A file is an ordinary PDF — every reader opens it. There is nothing to convert back.
